What Defrost Symbol Persisting Means
The GGv controller shows a defrost symbol while the cabinet is defrosting, and Liebherr notes that no refrigeration takes place during that phase and the running noise changes. What turns it into a problem is persistence: if the symbol is still there once a manual defrost has finished, the manual says the appliance has a problem.
Common Causes of Defrost Symbol Persisting
- A layer of ice built up on the cooling plate after a door was left ajar
- A defrost cycle that cannot complete, leaving the symbol latched on
- A defrost heater or its control no longer clearing the evaporator
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Liebherr gives you one documented step before calling. Activate the defrost function manually — a five-second button hold takes you into it — and let it run through. A door left slightly open for a long period is the cause the manual names for the ice that triggers it in the first place.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Because no cooling happens during a defrost phase, a cabinet stuck in one is not refrigerating at all — which is a very different situation from one that simply looks busy.
- Repeating the manual defrost more than once when the symbol does not clear only extends the period with no refrigeration, and Liebherr's own instruction at that point is to contact customer service.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
