Buzzing or Humming
A low buzz from the back of the unit is often the compressor itself, and can be an early indicator of mounting wear or a start-relay issue. Occasional humming during a defrost cycle is normal; a constant buzz that wasn’t there before isn’t.
Clicking
Repeated clicking, especially right before the compressor tries to start, often points to a failing start relay or capacitor — a component that’s inexpensive to replace but easy to misdiagnose as a dead compressor if you’re not familiar with the symptom.
Rattling
Rattling is frequently mechanical rather than electrical — a loose evaporator fan blade, an item stored too close to an internal panel, or, on freestanding units, an unlevel installation causing vibration against the floor or adjacent cabinetry.
