On Liebherr models equipped with an ice maker or water dispenser, the internal water filter is one of the few components genuinely meant for homeowner replacement — and one of the most commonly overdue.
The General Rule
Most manufacturers, Liebherr included, recommend replacement roughly every 6 months under normal use, sooner in hard-water areas where mineral content clogs the filter media faster.
Signs You’ve Waited Too Long
Noticeably slower water dispensing, reduced ice production, or water that tastes or smells slightly off are all signs the filter is restricting flow rather than doing its job. In more advanced cases, a badly clogged filter can put enough back-pressure on the water valve to cause it to fail entirely.
It’s a Genuine DIY Task
Filter replacement is one of the few things we always encourage owners to handle themselves — it takes a few minutes and doesn’t require opening any sealed components. If dispensing or ice production issues continue after a fresh filter, that points to a valve or ice-maker fault worth a technician visit.
